Free Seminar Hybrid Air Vehicles: A Transportation Solution Room 343 Drake Bldg. Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. January 31, 2012 For Immediate Release As part of its continuing research on lighter than air vehicles, The University of Manitoba Transport Institute is pleased to announce a FREE seminar on Hybrid Air Vehicles: A Transportation Solution to be held Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 343 of the Drake Centre, I.H. Asper School of Business. The seminar speaker is Mr. Stephen Newton, Director, Business Development, Discovery Air, Inc. A bio for Mr. Newton and a company profile follow below. A spec sheet for the HLAV is attached. DAI will also be announcing a graduate student competition for a paper on the use of hybrid air vehicles for humanitarian logistics. Company website: www.discoveryair.com ABOUT STEPHEN NEWTON Stephen spent 28 years in the Canadian Forces conducting airborne ISR and operational training in the Maritime Helicopter community before transitioning to Industry. Stephen holds a BEng in Fuels and Materials Engineering and an MSc in Oceanography and Underwater Acoustics. Between 2001 and 2004 he conducted concept development and experimentation on networked Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Beginning with workshops and brainstorming sessions, the Concept Development built a series of live experiments to guide Canadian Forces UAS development. The culminating refined hypothesis experiment saw the NASA Altair equipped with multiple Maritime payloads integrate into the commercial airspace between the Arctic Circle and the Canada-USA border south of Nova Scotia. Stephen retired from the CF in 2007 and worked with L-3 MAS until 2010 as a Director of Business Development focusing on UAS and Airborne C4ISR. He currently works in Business Development for Discovery Air Innovations where he uses his experience introducing UAS to service to deliver Hybrid Air Vehicles to operational service.
Who We AreISO Polar was founded in March 2005 as a not-for-profit airship research institute to undertake economic and engineering studies, coordinate demonstrations, facilitate certification tests and other activities that are in the public interest. A consortium approach is employed that gives all the parties the opportunity to become involved in a meaningful way, while excluding no one, including direct competitors. The membership of ISO Polar is broad and intended to encompass businesses with specific interests, as well as individuals with more general interest in the development of an airship industry worldwide. ISO Polar's Mission Statement. To encourage the development of airship technology for sustainable transportation and logistics applications in the Northern Latitudes. Membership in the ISO Polar Airship Association is open to all individuals, organizations, and corporations having an interest in advancing the development or application, of airships and airship technology in commercial transportation.
